The number of students applying to UK universities has gone up by 6.4% and the number of students applying to English universities has risen by 7.2%. The figures, from the admissions service, Ucas, show 395,307 students applied for UK university courses in 2007, compared to 371,683 in 2006

Tests Required

TOEFL/IELTS

Unlike the USA, the UK does not require any entrance tests except an English language proficiency test. Students whose first language is not English are required to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) which is administered at the British Council. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is also accepted in lieu of the IELTS.

Visa Procedure

The following documents in order to apply for a student visa (some of these documents will vary from consulate to consulate).

• A receipt for the nonrefundable application fee paid in local currency at the current exchange rate.
• Application form VAF1 - Non-Settlement
• Passport or travel document.
• A recent passport-sized (45mm x 35mm), color photograph
• Any relevant diplomas or educational certificates
• A letter from the university, college or school confirming the acceptance on a course of study in the UK, and a statement of charges for the course
• evidence of government sponsorship (if appropriate)
• Bank statements, pay slips or other evidence to show the evidence of stay and course fee
• If privately sponsored (for example, by a college in the UK) a letter from sponsor giving details of how they will support during studies, and evidence that they can do so.
