Education System

Holland, or more formally the Netherlands, is an internationally oriented and innovative country located in the heart of Europe. This makes it ideal for people who are looking to enrich their knowledge through study abroad. Holland was the first non-English-speaking country with courses taught in English. The Dutch higher education institutions together offer 1,150 international study programs and courses which are taught entirely in English.

These programs cover a broad range of fields. Curricula are intensive, at an advanced level, practically-oriented, and designed to meet the expectations of students seeking specialized knowledge. The courses alternate theory with practice in real or simulated work situations. Most study programs and courses lead to a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, a PhD degree, a diploma or certificate.

Holland has two main types of regular higher education: university education and higher professional education. The universities focus on the independent practice of research-oriented work in an academic or professional setting. The universities of professional education are more practically oriented, preparing students directly for specific careers.

Holland has also received international acclaim for its problem-based learning system, which trains students to analyze and solve practical problems independently.

The required scores are at least 80 ibt for TOEFL or between 5.5 and 7.0 for IELTS. The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is the entrance test to be taken by students applying for a Master’s degree in any field other than Management. Applicants applying for a Master’s in Management or Business

Administration major should take GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test). Not all the Universities in The Netherlands require GRE and GMAT scores.

Visa Procedure

Foreign students who wish to study or do an internship in the Netherlands need to go through the Dutch immigration procedures. To enter Netherlands for study purposes, people from most countries need a visa. This is a sticker placed in passport at the Dutch embassy or consulate in own country, but it must be applied for well in advance. Apply for an MVV at the Dutch embassy or consulate in home country (or the country in which the student legally reside). The procedure involves completing an application form and presenting all relevant documents. It will take about three to six months to process the application, sometimes even longer. Be sure to apply for MVV as early as possible.

However, many higher education institutions in the Netherlands can help to get an MVV more quickly by applying for it on behalf of the student. It is worth asking future host institution about this.
Remember: not under any circumstances, collect an MVV in the Netherlands - not even if the host institution in the Netherlands initiates the application procedure! MVVs can be collected only at the Dutch embassy or consulate in the home country (or the country in which legally reside)

Documents required when applying for an MVV

• a valid passport
