F-1 student visa allows a student to work for one year after graduation under a plan called Optional Practical Training (OPT). Once a student complete one year of working in the US a student will need to switch to a work permit (H-1) in order to continue working legally.

While studying, The US Immigration Officials allow a student to work for only 20 hours per week on campus. A student can take up jobs such as laboratory assistant, library helper, or work in the dining halls. Whatever the case, a student cannot exceed 20 hours of work per week. However, during vacation time a student can work for upto 40 hours per week.

"Course load" refers to the number of courses students take each term. The normal course load for a graduate student is three or four courses, which equals approximately nine to 12 credits per term. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service require that international students take a course load that is considered full-time by the institution.

Tests Required

TOEFL/IELTS/SAT/GRE/ GMAT

Standardized tests are an important part of the admissions process. All freshman applicants are generally required to submit SAT or ACT test results. The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is the entrance test to be taken by students applying for a Master’s degree in any field other than Management.

In addition to these tests, all students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Visa Procedure

All appointments for visa interviews at the Embassy's Consular Section are made via the Internet at www.vfs-usa.co.in

SEVIS FEE DEPOSIT: All students & exchange visitors must pay mandatory payment of the Sevis (Student/Exchange Visitor processing fee) before arriving for a visa appointment at the consulate. The fee is US$ 100 non-refundable. An applicant is entitled to apply for a student Visa not earlier than 120 days before the registration date specified on the FORM I-20.

Scheduling an Appointment (under new visa rules effective October 3, 2005): Prior to confirming a visa interview appointment online or at any US Visa Application Centre, Student need to pay the fees and obtain a Visa Fee Receipt from designated HDFC Bank. Visa Application Fee (MRV Fee): $100 in Indian Rupee equivalent at consular rate of exchange. Rupee amount at current rate of exchange (Rs. 42) is Rs 4,200/-Fill out a Visa Application Form DS-156, DS-157 and DS-158. Interview in the Embassy: An "interview'" will last no more than one or two minutes.

Documents required when applying for a Visa:
• I-20 Form
• Passport
• Photograph: One black and white or color photograph taken on a white background (size = 2 inches x 2 inches or 5cm. X 5 cm.) Photographs should be no more than six months old. Instant photos are not acceptable
